Bulgaria - A Crack for Luck
Eggs are decorated in many colors in Bulgaria, and an odd number of eggs are placed around a special Easter bread.
The eggs and bread are then taken to church and blessed by the clergy. Afterwards, they are taken home and given to friends for good luck. Eggs are cracked after the midnight service and over the next few days. One egg is cracked on the wall of a church. This is the first egg eaten after a long religious fast. Other eggs are cracked when people take turns tapping their chosen egg against the end of another.
Whoever ends up with the last unbroken egg is thought to have a year of good luck. This egg-cracking custom is celebrated in Latvia as well, where Easter is the major holiday of he year. Springtime and Easter are celebrated together with great delight after the cold and dreary winter.
Ask your friends at the Easter Egg Hunt if they want to join in a Bulgarian good luck crack. Then, when they say, "Yes," tap the end of your egg against the end of your friend's egg and say, "Good Luck!"
