Mexico - Semaņa Santa (Holy Week)
In Mexico, Easter is celebrated over a two-week period, during Semaņa Santa and Pascua.
Semaņa Santa means "Holy Week," the week from Palm Sunday to Easter Saturday. Semaņa Santa celebrates the religious aspects of the last days of Jesus' life. Pascua, the week from Easter Sunday to the following Saturday, celebrates Christ's resurrection.
These weeks in Mexico are the main times families take vacations, and in many towns, the full Passion Play (the story of Christ's last days) is enacted with actors dressing in the clothing worn 2,000 years ago during the time of Christ.
